Co-Pyrolysis of Woody Biomass and Oil Shale in a Batch Reactor in CO2, CO2-H2O, and Ar Atmospheres

The partial replacement of fossil fuels with biomass provides an alternative to producing cleaner and more sustainable energy fuels. Conventional shale oil production infrastructure can potentially be used in co-pyrolysis reduce the use decrease its environmental impact. effect adding 10 30 wt% woody biomasses (spruce, alder, pine, birch) into was studied through intermediate co-pyrolysis. experiments were carried out a batch reactor at 520 °C, 20 min residence time, CO2, CO2-H2O 1:1, Ar gas atmospheres. solid products collected analyzed for elemental composition surface area, while gases determined chromatography. difference experimental theoretical mass balances fuel blends lower than 2.5 all environments, indicating slight interactions between CO2 atmospheres contributed increased decomposition, up 2.6 products. Biomass combustible gases, especially CO yields, from 0.42 1.30 vol%. addition improve pyrolysis decomposition share residual 74.4 58–70 blends.
